Hush Little Baby

Baby Beth is on the way, and her room is ready for her.  If you remember in an earlier post, I shared the closet transformation in this 100 year old house.  The room itself was sort of a catch all, but no more!  I have included a few before pictures although the biggest change was the new closet.

As my daughter began collecting items for the nursery, her color choices emerged.  The room is very traditional with neutral colors of navy and white as the base.  She added pops of tangerine and fuchsia in pillows, throws and crib bedding, but the textures and hardware details make the room.

 I made drapes to match a purchased white with navy band dust ruffle.   

 On the left is the room before, and the right is the nursery now. 

I love all of the textures.  A natural sisal rug protects the wood floors.  The twin bed sports textures from linen, woven fabrics and a suede headboard.

We purchased the mobile on our trip to London. The soft clouds float in the air.

It is amazing what paint can do to change the mood of a room. I begin relaxing the moment I step into this space.  I cannot wait to rock in the new chair and sing lullabies to her.

Nursery Update

Sorry about the delayed post yesterday, but I went with my daughter and son in law to her doctor's visit, so I could see the baby.  She is due in September, and everything is going smoothly thus far.

My husband and son have completed their part of the nursery closet renovation. The original door's outline  is visible in the picture below.  The closet spans the entire length of this wall, but access was so limited because of the door location and the width of the closet.

An opening for double 5-panel doors (Home Depot special order to match existing doors) was created.  Electricity was also added so the closet could have lights and an outlet.

 

Now we can access the entire closet.  If you remember from the post before about this closet, we had to find a mill that could copy the trim around the closet.  I must say it is darn close to the existing trim.  (Pictures later with the trim)  Now I am scouring salvage yards for the moulding to make the piece above the door.  If I can't find any, I will check with my neighbor and see if he can make something for me as he is a master carpenter and has created beautiful furniture.

Paint colors have been selected, and my son in law is in the process of getting bids for tape and bedding and painting.  I can't wait to see the room when that is completed.

Babies are certainly miracles, and as I sat in the waiting room after the sonogram, my son in law expressed the same thought.  He said, " You know we go about our daily lives and let the most inconsequential things influence our thoughts while every second that ticks by, there is a miracle happening.  And I can't believe I am part of that miracle.  Wow!"  My sentiments exactly.

A Baby on the Way

We learned on our trip to Charleston that our daughter and her husband are expecting their first  baby in September.  We are overjoyed to hear this news.

Our daughter lives in an historic neighborhood and home that has been featured in This Old House magazine.  As with most older homes, there is a steady stream of repair work needed, and the room that will house the nursery will need a closet makeover.  It is not as simple as adding a closet or modifying the existing closet.  We must find period doors and have wood moulding made.  There also needs to be some work on the floor where we remove a wall, but generally the room is in great shape and is a nice size.

This view is from the doorway.  Furniture and other objects are placed around the room to get a feel for the new design.  

 The room is currently used for storage.  It has the original woodwork and great hard wood floors.

 Closer look at the closet door.  It will be replaced with double doors.  This door will replace a door in their bedroom.  The wood moulding was removed carefully, so it could be reused.

The inside of the closet is a mess.  A front parlor shares a wall with it, and previous owners used the space to build a recessed entertainment center that our daughter and son-in-law removed which left exposed wires and insulation.  We don't know who added the panelling.

Doors are ordered, so now we wait for them to arrive.  I will keep you posted with progress along the way.
